Oh! Calcutta

Have had the most entertaining three days. Can there be anything more civilised than a city where on every street you can eat perfectly cooked fish?

After the daily aggressions of Delhi, Kolkata's efforts seemed like mere querulousness -- tantrums coming out of boredom. On one notable evening, a man on the street picked a fight with our cab driver for not opening the door of the cab for my colleague and me to get in. Also read that a month ago someone died on the sets of a reality show (on BEngali television) called Filmi Fight. Turns out the drunken producerss and crew at an after-party threw a guy from the top of a building. Well, well.

I continue to love riding in cabs. Each time I slide in, I have to stop myself from telling the driver," Follow that car!"

I always dreamed of getting in a New York City yellow cab and saying "Penn Station, and step on it!" ---- and recently I did! ;-) Hope your dream comes true too.

I can almost guarantee that no self-respecting Calcutta cabbie will engage in a chase, especially if it's after lunch, unless there's an entire civilization or a fish roll threatened.
